How to Build a PHP-based RSS Feed Parser

Recently, I was building a website for a telecommunications startup and because they didn’t have a lot of content for their website, I suggested they use the content from a Yahoo Finance RSS feed. In today’s article, I will demonstrate how to write a simple function in PHP that allows you to display content from an RSS feed.

Wikipedia defines a parser as a part of a compiler, or an interpreter, which checks for proper syntax and builds a data structure based on that syntax. In this tutorial, we will take a look at how the PHP parser creates an array in which each element will contain the data found in the RSS feed items. However, I will go into more details when we start writing the PHP code.

I won’t go much into the XHTML/CSS code in this tutorial. Instead, I’ll focus on the PHP side. We’ll be creating a simple site with just two pages; home and news. The idea is to write two PHP functions that will spit out different content; one is for the display of the titles from the feed, and the other is for the content that will appear in a list form like those of a blog archive.

The land mass that is one-sixth of the Earth is always surprising. As the founder of one of design-related magazines in Russia (Designcollector.net), I am happy to present the hidden force that is Russia. I won’t dwell on the classic stereotypes but will rather look at the creativity flowing through.

The era of professional and commercial online design started in Russia about a decade ago. We’re now seeing an increase in professional design and development. I won’t concentrate much on the history of Web design in Russia; that has been happening for ages. Like everywhere in the world, Web design came to Russia as a modern way to present any kind of information to an audience online. So, principles such as simplicity, accessibility and eye-catching design have been cultivated for several years.

Web development as a profession was relegated to the elite for years until geek heads and artists took it over. For a few years there was a boom of home pages and tiny corporate websites that were built with any regard for the end user. This trend ended thankfully, in large part due to the highly scaled websites that came out the original and still unique studio founded by Artemy Lebedev, which has produced more than 760 websites.

Today, the professional scene of web design consists of thousands of freelancers, studios, agencies and large media companies, along with offshore and outsourcing businesses. I won’t do a “Top 20″ this or that rating, but I will try to touch on the most established parts of Russian Web design, including agencies, freelancers, portals and so on.

In 2000, permanent Internet connections were at a premium for University of Antwerp students, so Dries Buytaert and Hans Snijder set up a wireless bridge between their student dorms to share Hans's ADSL modem connection among eight students. While this was an extremely luxurious situation at that time, something was missing: There was no means to discuss or share simple things.

This inspired Dries to work on a small news site with a built-in web board, allowing the group of friends to leave each other notes about the status of the network, to announce where they were having dinner, or to share some noteworthy news items.

The software did not have a name until the day after Dries moved out after graduation. The group decided to put the internal website online so they could stay in touch, keep sharing interesting findings, and narrate snippets of their personal lives. While looking for a suitable domain name, Dries settled for 'drop.org' after he made a typo to see if the the name 'dorp.org' was still available. Dorp is the Dutch word for 'village', which was considered a fitting name for the small community.

Once drop.org was established on the Web, its audience changed as the members began talking about new web technologies, such as moderation, syndication, rating, and distributed authentication. Drop.org slowly turned into a personal experimentation environment, driven by the discussions and flow of ideas. The discussions about these web technologies were tried out on drop.org itself as new additions to the software running the site.

It was only later, in January 2001, that Dries decided to release the software behind drop.org as "Drupal." The purpose was to enable others to use and extend the experimentation platform so that more people could explore new paths for development. The name Drupal, pronounced "droo-puhl," derives from the English pronunciation of the Dutch word "druppel," which means "drop."

Have you updated your copy of Windows and received the "This copy of Windows is not genuine" notification. Have you ever wondered how to get rid of it?

The Windows Genuine Advantage notification checks if you have a genuine copy of Windows registered to that computer. It allows you to update your computer with the Windows updates. If you have installed it, and you do not have a genuine copy of Windows XP installed, then you may notice an icon at the bottom of your window before you Login. It will make you wait three seconds before allowing you to login.

Open C:\Windows\System32\

Search for WgaTray.exe and Delete it.

C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\ and delete WgaTray.exe here also.

Next you have to modify your registry.

Press the Start Button > Run and type regedit and then press enter.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify and delete the WGALOGON folder.

That's all you have to do, now you are WGA free. Just make sure you don't automatically install the WGA update again. Restart your computer to see if you did it correctly. The WGA logo should not appear on your login screen.

In fact, there’s been so much buzz that you might just not have enough time to read the thousands of articles being released on Google’s biggest product launch in recent memory. To make sense of it all, we have compiled key information, definitions, and links related to the launch of Google Wave. This in-depth guide provides an overview of Google Wave, discusses the terminology associated with it, details information on Google Wave applications, (i.e. the Twitter Wave app Twave), and goes over ways to keep yourself informed. We know you’re excited about Google Wave, so here’s what we think you should know:

Google Wave has a lot of innovative features, but here are just a few: - Real-time: In most instances, you can see what someone else is typing, character-by-character. - Embeddability: Waves can be embedded on any blog or website. - Applications and Extensions: Just like a Facebook (Facebook) application or an iGoogle gadget, developers can build their own apps within waves. They can be anything from bots to complex real-time games. - Wiki functionality: Anything written within a Google Wave can be edited by anyone else, because all conversations within the platform are shared. Thus, you can correct information, append information, or add your own commentary within a developing conversation. - Open source: The Google Wave code will be open source, to foster innovation and adoption amongst developers. - Playback: You can playback any part of the wave to see what was said. - Natural language: Google Wave can autocorrect your spelling, even going as far as knowing the difference between similar words, like “been” and “bean.” It can also auto-translate on-the-fly. - Drag-and-drop file sharing: No attachments; just drag your file and drop it inside Google Wave and everyone will have access.

Terminology

- Wave: A wave, specifically, refers to a specific threaded conversation. It can include just one person, or it can include a group of users or even robots (explained below). The best comparison I can make is that it’s like your entire instant messaging (IM) history with someone. Anything you’ve ever discussed in a single chat or conversation is a wave. - Wavelet: A wavelet is also a threaded conversation, but only a subset of a larger conversation (or a wave). It’s like a single IM conversation – a small part of a larger conversation and a larger history. Wavelets, though, can be created and managed separately from a wave. - Blip (BLIP): Even smaller than a Wavelet, a Blip is a single, individual message. It’s like a single line of an IM conversation. Blips can have other blips attached to them, called children. In addition, blips can either be published or unpublished (once again, it’s sort of like typing out an IM message but not yet sending it). - Document: A document actually refers to the content within a blip. This seems to refer to the actual characters, words, and files associated with a blip. - Extension: An extension is a mini-application that works within a wave. So these are the apps you can play with while using Wave. There are two main types of extenisons: Gadgets and Robots - Gadgets: A gadget is an application users can participate with, many of which are built on Google’s OpenSocial platform. A good comparison would be iGoogle gadgets or Facebook applications. - Robots: Robots are an automated participant within a wave. They can talk with users and interact with waves. They can provide information from outside sources (i.e. Twitter (Twitter)) or they can check content within a wave and perform actions based on them (i.e. provide you a stock quote if a stock name is mentioned). - Embeded Wave: An embeded wave is a way to take a Google Wave and the conversation within it and place it on your website. Users could use this as a chatroom, as a way to contact you, or for something more.

Wave Gadgets

A Wave Gadget is one of two types of Google Wave extensions. Gadgets are fully-functional applications. According to Google, gadgets are primarily for changing the look and feel of waves, although this seems to only scratch the surface of the potential of a wave gadget.

First: almost any iGoogle or OpenSocial gadget can run within Google Wave. That means thousands of applications that have been already created will work in Google Wave. Second: a gadget built within Google Wave can take advantage of live interaction with multiple users. This means something like a live online game with active participation from all users. In that way, it has similarities to Facebook or MySpace (MySpace) applications, which take advantage of your friend network to make games, quizzes, and applications more meaningufl and useful.

Gadgets are specific to individual waves, rather than to specific users. Thus, it’s not like having a Facebook app on your profile – the gadget belongs to everyone within the wave. They also do not have titles, to better integrate with the actual conversation. Some of the gadgets already built include a Sudoku gadget, Bidder (which turns your wave into an auction), and Maps (which allows for collaboration on a Google Map).

these tips and you will definitely have a much faster and more reliable PC! Most of the below tips works for windows XP.

1. Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you're willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

2. Drivers: Update your hardware drivers as frequently as possible. New drivers tend to increase system speed especially in the case of graphics cards, their drivers are updated by the manufacturer very frequently!

3. Minimizing: If you want to use several programs at the same time then minimize those you are not using. This helps reduce the overload on RAM.

4. Boot Faster: The 'starting Windows 95/98' message on startup can delay your booting for a couple of seconds. To get rid of this message go to c:\ and find the file Msdos.sys. Remove the Read-Only option. Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor. Finally, go to the text 'Options' within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0. To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5.. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.

6. Turn Off Animations: Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts. This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run. Now type Regedit and hit Enter. The Registry Editor will appear on the screen. Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You should see a MenuShowDelay value. If you don't then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String. Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay. Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field. This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop: Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab. Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page. Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

10. Defragment Often: Windows 98's Defrag tool uses Application Acceleration from Intel which means that when you defragment your drive, data is physically arranged on the drive so that applications will load faster.

11. Take your PC to Bed: Using the Advanced Power Management feature under Windows 98 gives you the option to use the sleep command. That way, you can send your PC to sleep instead of shutting it down and then restarting it. It's as simple as pressing a button and then pressing the same button to wake it up. You can tell Windows after how many minutes/hours of inactivity to automatically sleep the machine in the Advanced Power Management section of the Control Panel.

12. Faster Internet Access: If you use the Internet for reference and the sites you visit are rarely updated then try the following. In IE (the same can be done in Netscape) go to Tools, Internet Options. Next, click on Settings... In the Temporary Internet Files section. Finally, select Never for the first option and double the amount of storage space to use, click OK!

13. Benchmarking: Benchmarking can be very useful when run frequently. It can tell you how your PC's components are performing and then compare them to other machines like yours. For example, when you overclock your PC, you want to know how much more speed you have and whether it is stable. All this and more can be discovered using benchmarking. An excellent piece of software for doing this job is SiSoft Sandra which can be found in the Downloads File Archive!

14. Refresh the Taskbar without restarting: If you in some way change the taskbar, either in Regedit or elsewhere, you can refresh the task bar without restarting. Hold down Ctrl Alt Del, and double click on Explorer. Say Yes to close Explorer, but no to closing Windows. This will refresh the Taskbar and system tray.

15. Quick CD Eject: Instead of pushing the button on your drive, right-click your CD drive letter in My Computer and click on Eject. This will also remove any icons that have become associated with the CD drive.

16. Start Up Programs: Windows can be slowed down when programs run on start up. To eliminate this, check your Start up folder. You can access it from the start menu: Start, Programs, Start Up. Another way to eliminate programs from loading even before Windows actually starts is by doing the following: Click on Start, then Run. Type msconfig. It will take quite a long time for this program to load, but when you finally see it on your screen, explore the different tabs. They all have to do with how quickly your PC boots, so select what you want, and uncheck what you don't want!

17. Fonts: When Windows starts, it loads every single font in the Fonts folder. Therefore, the more fonts you have, the slower the booting process. To get rid of unwanted fonts, simply go to the Fonts folder under c:\windows and remove whatever you don't want. Fonts that have a red letter 'A' as their icon are system fonts, so don't delete them.

18. Stretching Wallpapers: Don't "stretch" your wallpaper in Windows 98 since it actually slows Windows down when you drag icons around on the desktop.

19. RAM Matters: If you have less than 32MB then you should seriously think of upgrading it to at least 64MB. Windows runs much more smoothly with 64MB or higher and tends to use less hard disk space for virtual memory.

20. Partitioning: A very nice little thing you can do to boost system performance. By partitioning your hard drive, splitting one physical drive into several logical ones, you can gain several advantages. 1. If you get a virus or you accidentally format a drive, not all will be lost. 2. By placing the swap file (Win386.swp) on a separate drive, The swap file will be less fragmented and thus, faster. 3. Place Windows on a separate drive and whenever you need to reinstall it, you rest assured that your data is safe on a separate drive. Partitioning can be done using a few programs such as FDisk which comes with DOS. However, FDisk formats everything on the hard disk before partitioning. Alternatively, you can use Partition Magic from
Power Quest to partition your hard disk without losing your data.

യൂണിക്കോഡ് രീതി നിലവില്‍ വരുന്നതിനു മുമ്പ് മറ്റുഭാഷകളിലെ ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍ ഡിസൈന്‍ ചെയ്തിരുന്നവര്‍, അന്ന ലഭ്യമായ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെ കോഡുകള്‍ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു ആ ഭാഷകള്‍ക്കും ഉപയോഗിച്ചത്. സാധാരണ കണ്ടുവരാറുള്ള ഒരു രീതിയായിരുന്നു. A B C D E ..... ക്രമത്തില്‍ അ, ആ, ഇ, ഈ, ഉ എന്നിങ്ങനെ മലയാളം അക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ ക്രമപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്ന രീതി. ഇതിന്റെ കുഴപ്പം, മലയാളത്തിലെ 53 അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെയും കട്ടകള്‍ നമ്മള്‍ ഓര്‍ത്തിരിക്കണം എന്നതായിരുന്നു. വേറൊരു പിശക്, നാം എഴുതാനുപയോഗിച്ച ഫോണ്ട് കത്ത് കിട്ടുന്ന ആളുടെ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറില്‍ ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ കത്തുമുഴുവന്‍ യാതൊരു അര്‍ത്ഥവും ഇല്ലാത്ത ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ലിപികളിലാവും കാണുക. ഇനി അഥവാ ഈ ഫോണ്ട് അവിടെ ഉണ്ട് എന്നുതന്നെയിരിക്കട്ടെ. എങ്കില്‍ക്കൂടി, കത്തുതുറന്നതിനുശേഷം, കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിനോട് പറയേണ്ടതുണ്ട്, ഈ ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍ ഇന്നതാണ് എന്ന്.

So what's so smart about SmartGWT? Let me try to explain. SmartGWT is not just another Widget library. While most Ajax frameworks focus primarily on presentation and displaying mostly read-only data, either local or via XML / JSON, SmartClient was built with server side integration in mind. Most enterprise applications are not just about about data presentation, but about being able to propagate data changes made by the user to the backend. So while its tempting to use library X that has a cool tree widget, it's not until you actually try to use it your application that you encounter the real world hard problems. For example, how do you take data from your business objects on the server to not only display in a tree widget, but also be able to update your data model when, say, the user reorders the tree nodes or make edits / deletes in the UI. How do you display hierarchical data where nodes may have hundreds of children? And so on..

4 Reasons to Validate your HTML

HTML validation allows authors to check their HTML syntax. Valid HTML is less likely to cause problems with different browsers and more likely to survive the next browser release. There are many reasons to validate your HTML, but here we have chosen to focus on historical examples that show why visually checking your Web pages in browsers is not enough. Reason #1: Netscape 1.2

When Netscape 1.1 was released, many authors were delighted to find that they could create animated titles and backgrounds by including multiple title and body tags. Validators flagged these as errors since only one TITLE and BODY is permitted in HTML.

Netscape 1.2 fixed the bug in Netscape 1.1, and multiple title and body tags were ignored. The result on some invalid pages varied from an incomplete or incoherent title to unreadable text.
Reason #2: Netscape 2.0

Netscape 2.0 provided the most stark display of the importance of validation. Prior to Netscape 2.0, the Web's most popular browser quietly corrected an author's missing quotation mark, as in Oops. Netscape 2.0 began requiring that closing quotation mark, and at the same time parts of many Web pages began disappearing. Valid HTML survived unscathed.
Reason #3: Netscape 3.0

Netscape 3.0 began looking too hard for entities in attribute values. The result was that unescaped ampersands in attribute values could cause Netscape to use the wrong attribute value. For example, the invalid HTML a href="foo.pl?chapter=1&section=2" worked fine in versions of Netscape prior to 3.0. But Netscape 3.0 would try to fetch "foo.pl?chapter=1§ion=2" instead of the "right" location. The valid HTML, a href="foo.pl?chapter=1&section=2", has worked fine in all versions of Netscape.
Reason #4: Netscape 4.0

Netscape 4.0 began requiring the terminating semicolon on entities where previous versions often had not. For example, some HTML tutorials show their expertise with &ltP&gtFoo in examples, which Netscape 4.0 shows literally while previous versions had shown "Foo". Again, valid HTML worked fine in all versions of Netscape.
